AFTER more than a few ups and downs, Yamaha’s Chad Reed did what he should have done much earlier in the season and finally claimed the 2008 AMA Supercross championship, his second, after claiming a resounding victory at the series showdown in sin city, Las Vegas, on Saturday night.

THE 2008 Scottish Six Days Trial got off to a fantastic start with brilliant sunshine gracing the Highlands for the opening day’s 58-mile run – and the day ended with a three-way tie for the lead! Dougie Lampkin posted his intention to stamp his authority on the event in his eagerly anticipated return ride with a cool, confident clean sheet through the day’s 30 sections – but keeping Dougie honest were a pair of Sam’s, in the form of Ludgate and Haslam!

The going was quite tough for riders on day one. Clerk of the course, Alex Smith, and his merry men, had plotted a course going the opposite direction to many previous years. Late spring snow falls had ensured that the moors were much wetter than usual and the long haul over the Meall na Cruaidhe path was more energy sapping than at former events. Uncharacteristically of the Pre-65 Scottish was a massive log-jam queue at Camas na Muic on the south shore of Loch Leven – a point noted for next year by the organisers.

THE mighty Repsol-Montesa HRC squad dominated the two-day third round of the FIM 2008 SPEA World Trials Championship, staged at Sequatchie, Tennessee, in the United States of America, finishing one-two on both days. The excellent Trials Training Centre venue saw Takahisa Fujinami successful on the opening day, staged in hot, humid but dry conditions, whereas when the rain fell on day two it was World Champ Toni Bou who regained his normal position at the head of the field.

THE second round of the Ian Durston Plant Services British Sidecarcross Championship was held at the brilliant Desertmartin track in Northern Ireland. This was the first time the championship had ventured ‘across the water’ to the province and it was worth the effort as the track was in excellent condition, though it was tough as the soft sandy track cut into deep ruts as the day progressed – making it a real survival of the fittest!

After a rough couple of weeks that almost cost him the title, the 17-year-old bounced back in emphatic style at the final round of the East Coast legs of the series at St Louis on Saturday night to snatch a famous and controversial win from championship rival Ryan Villopoto.
