Early bird for Suzuki

WITH Suzuki having been late launching its 2008-model RM-Z450, it is certainly not going to make the same mistake with the 2009 model and with Suzuki GB having just unveiled the 2009 UK motocross line-up, with new variations of the outstanding four-stroke range and a continued commitment to two-stroke models, the bigger news is that – they will be in the shops “with immediate effect”.

Organised by the Devon MCC and with the track prepped during the week by Justin Barclay, the scene was set for some fantastic racing and, as the championship comes to a close with just one more round remaining at Brookthorpe, everyone had to be on top form.

MARK Eastwood and Jonathan Pettitt continued their dominance of the 2008 British Two-stroke Championship at Blaxhall on Sunday, but David Willett was on hand to remind them that they’re not going to have it all handed to them on a plate.
With the Suffolk sand track well watered by the elements, just staying on the bike was a challenge, but there was no shortage of lines and the racing was excellent.

A taste of Adventure

YAMAHA pioneered the new breed of four-stroke off-road comp bikes with its revolutionary YZ400F back in 1997. From this beginning, evolved Yamaha’s class-leading single-cylinder four-stroke models in both motocross and enduro designated YZ250F and WR250F respectively. For over a decade, the Yams have been right up there with the best in class.

DOUBTFUL to even start on Sunday after mid-week surgery to repair a broken collarbone and hampered further by a draining bladder infection, KTM UK’s Shaun Simpson defied the odds to claim an outstanding overall victory at the penultimate round of the Maxxis British Motocross Championship at Brampton, Cumbria, on Sunday.

Nearly gone for a Burton!

WEEKS of preparation at the Burton MCC’s Stenson track looked to be undone as heavy overnight rain turned a well-prepared surface into goo on Sunday. Lying on the flood plain of the river Trent, literally a couple of feet above the river level, the track was extremely muddy going in practice but as the sun came out and the wind blew, signs of improvement began to show as the first block of racing got underway.

Dashing Dallaway

THIS year’s famous Nostalgia Scramble, promoted by the Kendal Classic Club and sponsored by Triumph Cumbria, provided truly great entertainment from start to finish for the large turnout of spectators.
The superb track stayed dry despite the odd shower and by the end of proceedings was, amazingly, almost dusty.
First up were the real men on their heavy Pre-60 machines and it was big Pete Hollinshead from Nantwich on his 650cc BSA who took the win from the Tribsa of Ilkeston’s Steve Gagg. In third place was the unlucky Peter Jackson on his beautiful Gold Star BSA.

Calvert enjoys Holme Brew’

KENDAL Classic MCC got its Nostalgia Weekend of off-road competition away to a cracking start with the Nostalgia Trial, sponsored by the Coniston Brewing Co with their equally cracking Bluebird beer! The trial took place on Saturday at Holme Farm, Middleton, near Sedbergh, Cumbria, the day before the Nostalgia Scramble at the same venue and once again there was a huge entry of 200 riders made-up of Pre-65 and Twin-shock machines who were provided with two routes, Hard and Easy, through each of the 15 sections.
There was a new course and many new sections this year as part of the old course was not allowed due to environmental reasons but new sections in streams and gullies in amongst trees made up the defecit - and were not quite as hard as the sections lost down by the river!

Lok’ on Tommy!

TOMMY Searle took his fourth GP win of the year, at Loket, on Sunday but a single error midway through the opening moto cost the Brit the chance to reduce the 20-point leeway to Tyla Rattray in their duel for the MX2 world crown as the KTM team-mates ended the day in stalemate with 47 points apiece.

DESPITE the appalling weather making the Crychan Enduro the hardest round of the British Enduro Championship this season by far, Insight Renewables D3-Racing KTM rider, Tom Sagar, made light work of the conditions to claim not only the overall Championship class victory on both days but also wrapped up his second consecutive British Enduro Championship title in the process.

A treble for Pettitt at Wakes

ROUND six of the DEP British Two-stroke Moto-cross Championship saw Wakes Colne in Essex, perfumed with the glorious smell of pre-mix. The track was, as ever, immaculately prepped and perfect come Sunday morning, even with a very wet build-up to the event. Riders were spoilt for choice when it came to lines, and the dirt was spot-on.
Despite the perfect conditions however, Andre David, third in the Open Experts standings, had a couple of nasty offs in practice – the second of which left him with a dislocated elbow and put an end to his day before racing began.

Master and commander

WAYNE Smith (Pioneer Yamaha) sailed to two dominant wins in the Pro Open class at round six of the AMCA’s British Masters Series, staged at a rough and tough Hawkstone Park, Shropshire.
The hard, fierce and technical conditions meant that in the very competitive Pro 125cc class, it was the rider who made the least mistakes would take the overall. And that’s how it turned out Martin Barr (U-Tag Yamaha) claimed the overall win with a second and a race win, just two-points clear of race one winner, PAR Homes Honda rider, Shane Carless.

Sloley does it for Adrian

Sloley Park in North Devon was the venue for ‘The Classic MotorCycle’ British Classic Scrambles Championship on Sunday. The fifth round in the series brought with it the wind and the rain.
It rained continuously on Saturday and two tractors were kept busy towing vehicles into the sloping paddock. Sunday saw the worst of the wet stuff disappear east but there were scuds aplenty and the track resembled a ploughed field in places well before the end. Not that this seemed to worry Andy Roberton and Adrian Cox. In the words of one of their adversaries, “they seemed to float over the badly rutted surface”. They were the stars of another excellent championship meeting, but there were many heroes amongst the entry of nearly 150 (all Pre-65 and Pre-74).
