Bird on a Wyre

WITH the temperature well below freezing and a thick frost on the ground at Winkworth Farm, Lea, near Malmesbury, the final round of the Wyre Forest Off-Road club championship was looking likely to be a slippery one, particularly for the Auto Solo riders who had been waiting patiently since 9am to start.

They finally got away just before 10am, racing for an hour around their longest course yet, of approximately 2.6 miles. Mitchell Warhurst took up his usual position in the lead, with Jack Law hot on his tail.
This has been a familiar sight at most of the club's enduros, but this time Mitch had his work cut-out as Jack finally made his move to take control of the race, until yet another mechanical failure forced Jack into the holding area while his team repaired his bike. However, too much time was lost, leaving Mitch to take yet another win and the overall championship. Jake Dormer finished second and Joe Gwyther third.
As the day went on the sun started to thaw the frozen track providing some excellent grip as it cut up. Certain areas caught out a few of the more experienced riders pushing hard on the first lap of the second race for Youth Solos. The course still remained slippery in areas the sun couldn't reach which tested the skill of riders for 1.5 hours on the very demanding six mile loop.
