Foxhill MXGB 2022 preview: An iconic track awaits five classes of British Motocross Championship racing

By Team TMX on 14th Apr 22

British Motocross Championship Foxhill

The MXGB series returns this weekend on Easter Sunday (April 17) at Foxhill Moto Park with Tommy Searle, Conrad Mewse, Tyler Westcott, Billy Askew and Robbie Daly entering the second round of the Revo ACU British Motocross Championship Fuelled by Gulf Race Fuels proudly wearing their red championship-leader plates.

Hosted by the Langrish Club, the second round of the series will see five out of seven classes in action as the two-smokin 65s and 125 class have a weekend off. That wont detract from the top-drawer action though as the MX1, MX2, 250cc and two 85cc divisions both Big-Wheel and Small-Wheel are set to stun the huge crowd thats expected to turn out at the iconic venue on the outskirts of Swindon.

Crendon Fastrack Hondas Tommy Searle took both MX1 moto wins at Culhams season opener and sits on a healthy 10-point lead headed into Foxhill where hes also performed well in the past.

Tommy Searle Tommy Searle

Most expected Searle to continue his excellent form in the MX Nationals season opener, but the former Grand Prix racer had a bit of a mare at a brutal FatCat, with team boss Dave Thorpe considering the day well below expectations. Thorpe will be hoping to get the right reaction at Foxhill on Sunday.

SS24 KTMs Shaun Simpson is currently the best of the rest with the rejuvenated Scot free from the shackles of MXGP competition now fully focussed on domestic action. Simpson has wowed crowds in some stunning Foxhill battles over the years and will be looking to assert himself as the series' top dog.

But there are at least four others youd be a fool to bet against taking the win at Foxhill as Verde Shiloh KTMs Jake Millward, Cab Screens Crescent Yamahas Harri Kullas, Revo Seven Kawasakis Dylan Walsh and SC Sportshome Husqvarnas Josh Gilbert are all motivated to improve their standing in the series and all have won at Foxhill before.

Gilbert smoked the field at FatCat that came off the back of a second place in the second moto at Culham.

Kullas was lurking at Culham with a fifth and a fourth place. And if he feels he needs more confidence, he only needs to look up his results from last year at Foxhill. He won the first race and was second in the final moto to give the Estonian the overall victory.

We hoped to see more from Walsh than what we did at Culham, but don't right off the super-fast British-born Kiwi.

There will be no Evgeny Bobryshev at Foxhill as he sits at home in the Netherlands, unable to race anywhere of note with the continued ban on Russian athletes.

Add in riders of the calibre of Jake Nicholls (Crendon Fastrack Honda), who looked great at FatCat, despite his dislike for the track, Ashton Dickinson (Talk Templant KTM), John Adamson (ASA United GASGAS), Steven Clarke (Store 114 Racing KTM), the Gabriel KTM boys Brad Todd and Liam Knight as well as former two-time champ Billy MacKenzie, Bulgarian export Petar Petrov, Apico Husqvarnas Stuart Edmonds and Martin Barr and youve got a great recipe for some sweet racing. And thats just one of the five classes on show!

Conrad Mewse Conrad Mewse

Moving to MX2 and Conrad Mewse was unstoppable in Oxfordshire although former team-mate Isak Gifting who's getting his first taste of British tracks pushed him hard. The Stebbings KTM and Hitachi KTM Fuelled by Milwaukee pair have been going at it in the world championship too with not a great deal of love between the pair who are separated at the top of the Revo title chase by a meagre six points.

Last year, Steven Clarke and John Adamson stood on the box at Foxhill but won't contest for MX2 medals on Sunday with their switch to MX1 this year.

Currently third in the championship chase is Apico Husqvarnas two-stroke evangelist Jamie Law, who surprised and delighted everyone, including his team boss, when he took a career-first British Championship podium in Oxfordshire at the age of 35!

In all fairness, conditions at Foxhill are less likely to suit the way the 250cc two-stroke puts down its power so a repeat podium visit for the Cumbrian property developer could be a big ask.

Jake Millward Jake Millward

A whole heap of young guns are following Law closely in the series standings with Verde Shiloh KTMs Kyle McNicol and Big Van World DRT Kawasakis Taylor Hammal both there and ready to strike. Florian Miot (SC Sportshomes Husqvarna), Jamie Carpenter (GRT Impact KTM), Jay Hague (Crendon Fastrack Honda) and Carlton Husband (Phoenix Eventstrokes Kawasaki) will all be looking to improve their series ranking on the day too.

Although McNicol missed out on a podium at Culham, he still produced a third-place finish in the second moto, so he could be one to watch.

Like McNicol, Carpenter had a disappointing first race in Culham but dug deep for fourth in the second moto. He followed that up with a dominating double win in the MX Nationals at FatCat.

Husband and Grimshaw have shown some good form early in the season, with Grimshaw involved in the EMX series, most recently last weekend in Trentino.

The 250 Youth class sees a couple of wild card entries in the form of MGMX KTMs Ben Mustoe and James Barker wholl be looking to upset the applecart thats currently being owned by Tyler Westcott who took three wins from four at Culham. Travis Steels bagged a moto win and took second overall with Team Greens Jak Taylor, Finley Evans (GRT Impact KTM) and Wiltshires very own Domonic Newbury (MotoXtreme GASGAS) all also in the mix. Expect them to be up front this weekend.

Billy Askew has been the lad to beat in the BW85 class so far this year with the GRT Impact KTM star taking maximum points at Culham. Jake Walker (Mr Ts GASGAS), Josh Vail (SJP Moto) and Charlie Richmond (MGMX KTM) all showed podium pace in Oxfordshire and will be looking to do more of the same at Foxhill. Throw in lads like Freddie Gardiner (MGMX KTM), Ryan Waggott (Radgie Racing Husqvarna), Jamie Keith (MBR/PX McGuigan KTM) and Gus Mustoe (MGMX KTM) and weve got some hot action on our hands and lets not forget the UKs fastest female 85cc pilot Lucy Barker who is a solid top-10 contender.

The SW85 class will be the icklest racers on the day but dont let their size fool you into thinking they're anything less than fully committed throttle monsters! Robbie Daly (Mad 4 Motocross KTM) was top dog at Culham although Hayden Statt (Manchester MCs GASGAS), Alfie Geddes-Green (MPM GASGAS), Archie Jay Girdham (SJP Moto), Blake Ward Clarke (JMR Foundation) and Joel Winstanley-Dawson (Castle Trucks/Fasthouse) were all right on the pace. Expect big things from these mini warriors who are sure to love ripping up the Foxhill circuit.

Foxhill Moto Park will be well signposted from Junction 15 of the M4 and can be easily found off the B1492 which you can pick up from the A419 at the first roundabout north of the motorway. SatNav users will want to use the SN4 0DR postcode while what3words fans will find what theyre after at famed.sway.lotteries.

Practice is set to start at 08:45 with the MX2 class scheduled to appear just after 10 am with racing following straight after the practice and qualifying sessions. All on-track action will be done and dusted by 5 pm with the overall, Kecks Fastest Lap and 24MX Holeshot awards to be given out in a lavish ceremony.

Tickets for the second stop of the 2022 Revo ACU British Motocross Championship Fuelled by Gulf Race Fuels tour can be purchased at the gate when you arrive. The prices are Adults 25, Children 5 and Family Tickets (two adults, two children) 55.
