British Motocross Championship Culham

The 2022 Revo ACU British Motocross Championship Fuelled by Gulf Race Fuels kicks off at Culham this weekend and from what we can gather its going to be a fairly awesome year. Here's everything you need to know and perhaps some things you dont about the official British national series.

This weekend (March 12/13) sees Culham MX Park in Oxfordshire host the opening round of the 2022 MXGB championship. While its all been a bit low-key so far we cant hold back our excitement any longer its go time!

Much like last season, the championship is a mixture of one and two-day events featuring the up and coming youth stars and established professional adult racers all on the same bill. The season opener at Culham is one of three that is scheduled to carry all seven classes (65, SW85, BW85, 125, 250, MX2, MX1) with the other six dates mixing things up to ensure all classes get at least five rounds with the maximum number of rounds in any championship being eight.

The MX1 and MX2 classes will appear at Culham, Foxhill, Lyng, Canada Heights, Blaxhall, FatCat, Whitby and a finale thats to be confirmed we can only assume itll be either Cusses Gorse or more likely Landrake.

In addition to those eight stops on the tour, a youth-only round at Warmingham Lane near Middlewich in Cheshire which also features the final of the ground-breaking British Auto Cup bolsters their number of stops on the championship tour.

Theres a full table of dates and venues elsewhere in this feature so please check it out although also be aware that the schedule may change as the year progresses. Well keep you up to speed on that though so fear not.

MX1

Jake Nicholls Jake Nicholls

The premier class in the Revo ACU British Motocross Championship Fuelled by Gulf Race Fuels series is the MX1 division and if the action is even half as good as it was last year then were in for one hell of a season.

Current champion Tommy Searle (Crendon Fastrack Honda) will start as one of the favourites to win although hes bound to have his hands full with riders of the calibre of 2021 runner-up Harri Kullas (Cabscreens Crescent Yamaha), Josh Gilbert (SC Sporthomes Husqvarna) and lets not forget a man whose main focus is now the domestic championship Shaun Simpson (Gabriel KTM Fuelled by Dyce Carriers).

Revo Seven Kawasakis Dylan Walsh is also a threat to take the title and class newcomers John Adamson (ASA United GASGAS) and Ashton Dickinson (Talk Templant Powered By Multitek) will also want to make their presence felt. Jake Nicholls (Crendon Fastrack Honda) and Elliott Banks-Browne (newly announced to FUS Marsh Geartec Husqvarna) will be right there in the mix as will Martin Barr (Apico Husqvarna), Petar Petrov (Phoenix Evenstrokes Kawasaki), Jake Millward (Verde Shiloh KTM), Steven Clarke (Store 114 Racing) and Brad Todd (Gabriel KTM).

Thats 14 riders who youd consider being top-10 guys so as long as everyone turns up fit and healthy its gonna be a fair old fight with points tough to come by.

MX2

Conrad Mewse Conrad Mewse

The MX2 class isnt quite so packed out with star names but that wont detract from the on-track action. Current MX2 champion Conrad Mewse is fully committed to the British series even after splitting with the Hitachi KTM Fuelled by Milwaukee team that he won his British titles with. Now mounted on a Stebbings KTM, Mewse will be looking for title #3.

His old team will add Swedens Isak Gifting and young Dutchman Kay Karssemakers into the mix with other riders to watch out for including ASA United GASGAS rider Bobby Bruce (update: Bobby has knee and is out), Florian Miot (SC Sporthomes Husqvarna), Jay Hague (Crendon Fastrack Honda) and James Carpenter (GRT Impact KTM).

A whole heap of former youth stars will be worth keeping an eye on too with 2021s top MXY2 performer Alfie Jones (Chambers Husqvarna) spearheading their attack. Wal Beaney (CI Sport/Destination MX), Sam Atkinson (Phoenix Evenstrokes Kawasaki), Jack Lindsay (Apico Husqvarna) and Bailey Johnston (Verde Shiloh KTM) are all worth a watch as will be Jamie Law (Apico Husqvarna), Michael Ellis (Store 114/Harris Grab KTM), Carlton Husband (Phoenix Evenstrokes Kawasaki), Tom Grimshaw (Chambers Husqvarna), Callum Mitchell (Fabrican Race Team) and the smallest name in motocross Sam Nunn (Cabscreens Crescent Yamaha).

We must briefly mention #272 Neville Bradshaw, who has teamed up with Geoff Walker's excellent SR75 Suzuki team and has a red hot 250 two-stroke primed for action. The veteran racer is addicted to motocross competition and can't help but do some select races in 2022 you're a badass Nev!

Again, like the MX1 class, you cant help but think some very talented riders are going to leave Culham with very few or even zero points in their account such is the quality of the championship field.

250/125 (MXY)

With MXY2 entries at an all-time high, the RHL crew was forced to split the classes for 2022 and now we have 125 and 250 Youth divisions.

charlie-heyman-will-take-some-stopping-in-the-125-class Charlie Heyman

There are some incredibly talented young men in each class and picking a winner seems like a dangerous task. 125 runner Joe Brookes (GRT Impact KTM) was absolutely incredible at the Hawkstone International where Ben Mustoe (Matt Gardiner MX), James Barker, Charlie Heyman (SJP Moto), Ollie Colmer (GRT Impact KTM), Joel Fisher (AD Modular/Beer Trader), Reece Jones (SJP Moto) and Tyla Hooley (ASA United GASGAS) all showed good pace too.

2021-sw85-champ-reece-jones-makes-the-giant-leap-to-the-125cc-class Reece Jones

Class newcomer Cole McCullough (Hitachi KTM Fuelled by Milwaukee) is sure to be on the pace too as will Ashton Boughen (BCS KTM), Jude Turton (MJW/DP Racing/Syntol/RFX) and Harrison Greenough (Madison 3Flo/Dirt Worx). Itd also be rude not to mention current BWMA 85cc champion Beanie Reece who makes the move to full-size bikes with Team Green Kawasaki.

In the 250 class, the lads to watch for are Tyler Wescott (HJA Motorcycles/Planetmoto Holidays), Travis Steels (ANSAMX), Charlie Palmer (Team Green), Finley Evans (GRT Impact KTM) and Harvey Cashmore (Chambers racing). Jayden Haigh (SJPMoto), Jaygo Beaty (Dennis Winters/Custom MX), Kiean Boughen (BCS KTM), McKenzie Marshall (DK Offroad/Oasis Construction) and Domonic Newbury are also in with a shout and it will be interesting to see which of these riders will establish themselves at the front of the pack consistently.

BW85

The BW85 class rarely disappoints and even with so many riders moving up to the 125, 250 and even MX2 classes there are plenty of rapid riders ready to take over at the front of the pack in 2022.

ryan-waggott-will-be-one-to-watch-in-the-bw85-class Ryan Waggott

Billy Askew (GRT Impact KTM) and Matt Gardiner MX teammates Gus Mustoe, Charlie Richmond and Freddie Gardiner were all very impressive in 2021 as was Josh Vail (SJP Moto) and Brandon Buckley (Phoenix Evenstrokes Kawasaki) and Ryan Waggott (Radgie Ry Racing). Jamie Keith (MBR/PX McGuigan) often goes beneath the radar but should be winning races in 2022 and you can also expect Jake Walker (MR Ts Racing/CMR Supplies/MH Racing) and Max Harris (FXR/MIA Construction) to be nearer the head of the pack too.

SW85

The SW85 class sees an influx of talent from the 65cc class with Blake Ward-Clarke (JMR Foundation) the highest-ranked returnee he finished seventh in 2021. The big threat in the SW class appears to be Robbie Daly (Mad 4 Motocross/who moves up from the 65s having dominated that division last year. The only rider to beat him in 2021, Alfie Geddes-Green, also moves up as does third-placed 65 runner Joel Winstanley-Dawson (Castle Trucks/Fasthouse) youd have to expect them to be in the running also.

The 65 class also sees an influx of new faces for 2022 with current Auto champ Cohen Jagielski (FastEddy/JMR Foundation/Rock Oil) probably the one to watch. But Jett Gardiner (Matt Gardiner MX), Teddy Merriman (GRT Impact KTM), Arthur Moore (Retro Coatings/RMJ Academy), Riley-Ray Barrow (Mad 4 Motocross) and SX star Cameron Berry (DTH/SMRacing) are all showing plenty of promise also. Who will take the win at Culham? We really arent sure and theres only one way to find out...

British Auto Cup

The British Auto Cup format will see riders of 50cc machines qualify for the finals in their home region which is a concept first used back in the early days of youth sport but one that also works damn well. With that in mind, we can absolutely guarantee that those who qualify for the Warmingham Lane weekender will be the best of the best.

Final Thoughts

So thats about all weve got for right now. The championship kicks off this weekend at the beautiful Thameside setting of the wonderfully all-weather Culham MX Park where the championship cant be won but it can most certainly be lost. At last years season-opener it was Evgeny Bobryshev (now banned from racing in the series) who topped the MX1 podium with maximum points while Conrad Mewse did a similar demolition job in MX2.

Interestingly, a fair few of the top contenders in each pro class are yet to race in 2022 which may add to the mayhem.

If you can't make it to Culham, you can watch the opening round of the championship on RHL/MXGB-TV here

We'll have more coverage on the 2022 MXGB series over the coming days so keep it locked to TMX.
