Shaun Simpson returns to racing - 'retirement didn’t suit me'

British Motocross Championship Shaun Simpson

Shaun Simpson isn't ready to retire just yet. The British motocross star and multi-time winner of the ACU British Motocross Championship has, unsurprisingly, said he would see us at the races this year.

Simpson is the last British rider to win in the MXGP class and has won the British series on three occasions (2008-MX2, 2014-MX1, 2015-MX1) and will look to add to that tally of British titles in 2022. Posting on social media, Simmo wrote: "RETIREMENT DIDN'T SUIT ME. A couple of fun months back at home but decided I couldn't totally hang my boots up... see you at the British championship."

Salop Motor Club had already confirmed the 33-year-old's entry for the Hawkstone International on February 13, and it's not a shock he wants to try at least one year of domestic racing, in a similar vein to defending British champion Tommy Searle. The Crendon Fastrack Honda rider retired from MXGP at the end of 2019 but has successfully continued to race in national championships.

Thanking his vital sponsors for keeping him on track, Simpson added: "Team SS24 KTM will continue for another year with continued support from KTM UK, Dyce carriers, MODU project services, Carnegie Fuels, Site Sealants, Ironsight, Safe Access, Dennison Trailers and welcoming GABRIEL MOTOCROSS onboard in 2022 as a title sponsor."

Simpson gets his season underway with a couple of international races, starting with Lacapelle Marival this weekend and then Hawkstone on February 13. Then it will be swiftly onto the start of the British championship campaign, beginning with Culham on March 13.

Welcome back, Shaun.
