Great Britain win Women's cup

Dark skies and torrential rain provided the backdrop for a closely fought Women's cup, with five teams separated by just seven marks after the first lap of eighteen sections. However it was Great Britain who triumphed in the tough and wet conditions during the closing lap to snatch a dramatic victory from Spain by a mere three marks.

Last year's winner's Germany were demoted to third place, as Women's World champion Laia Sanz helped Spain improve on their third place in 2006 to become runners up this time around. Japan provided the surprise performance of the day, by holding third spot at the halfway point and eventually take fourth position at the finish. Riding on home soil the French team took a slightly disappointing fifth place.

Maria Conway, a member of the winning Great Britain team summed up the day. "We didn't want to finish second again, so it feels so great to have finally won. It is also great having won here before we ride at home on the Isle of Man next year. We had no idea of the exact scores, but we knew Spain was riding well with Laia, and both German girls looked to be riding well too. We knew it was going to be close again, but we kept it together and worked as a team. The rain helped us a bit during the second lap, just when everyone else was struggling. We have been favourites for the last four years, so at least this time we lived up to expectations.”

Laia Sanz explained where Spain's challenge faded. "We made a good first lap, and although the conditions were wet we were riding quite well. It was a good trial, with some difficult sections, but it was section ten that cost us the trial. Each lap we took five points, on a section that was very easy. We were close, but I must congratulate team Great Britain as they made a really strong second lap.”

A winner last year, Germany's Iris Kramer spoke about their day. "It was a difficult, but nice competition. Great Britain were the favourite this morning, so that proved to be right. I made a bad mistake in section three on the first lap where I took five marks, and also on the second lap when I took two marks, but the worse thing was a five in section six when I ran out of time. I know it is not possible to win every year, so we came here with no pressure, and enjoyed the competition, as it is my favourite race each season.”
