James rules in Scotland!

Motocross

JAMES Dabill, ably shepherded by Jack Lee and shadowed by Andy Huddleston all week long, was victorious in the 2007 Scottish Six Days Trial last week, having led the prestigious event every single day since the opening rain-lashed Monday, when the 21 year-old top-scored with an eight mark loss, right through to the final day. Dibs posted the best score - or joint top score - on no fewer than four of the six days, and eventually ran out the winner by a healthy 14 marks.

James's victory on the beautiful 300cc Future TRW Montesa was actually the first four-stroke win since Alan Lampkin's, back in 1966, on a British-built BSA. Alan's son James was of course riding this year and finished 16th.

Dabill's win more than made up for the disappointment last year when he screwed-up on time on the final day and missed-out on a podium. Said Dibs as he signed off at the finish, ''It means such a lot to win this event, this is my fourth time in Scotland so I knew what it would take to win. The whole team have worked absolutely brilliantly and I just have to thank Jack (Lee) and Andy (Huudleston) for all their support. It was even better on Saturday as my TRW boss Quirino Tironi flew in from Italy and watched. It means a lot when the boss shows such interest!''

Michael Brown, Dabill's team-mate last year when both rode for the TTT Beta squad, pinched the runner-up berth at the death from defending champ Graham Jarvis, but only on a tie-break as Browny made a late Saturday charge to level-peg with Grimbo on 35. Graham, riding the four-stroke Sherco well, suffered a bad opening day and just couldn't gain the ground lost back through the week.

There was drama in the closely-fought Ladies contest as Friday's overnight leader Katy Sunter had a nightmare of a Saturday while arch-rival Iris Kramer had what she herself described as her ''best day of the week'' to take the Ladies award by exactly 30 points from new second-place girl Donna Fox, who pushed Katy down to third, with a typical never-say-die ride.

Most of the remaining Special Awards were won pretty comprehensively with 17 year-old Alexz Wigg having a fantastic week, finishing sixth overall and taking the Newcomers by just short of 100 marks - an amazing achievement by John Shirt's Gas Gas protege.

Dabill's shadow, Andy Huddleston, enjoyed a god ride in his own right to take the Services win by a huge margin while Phil Alderson just continues to improve with age to take a strong win in the massive Over 40 entry from Harold Crawford and Nigel Birkett. Coincidentally, back in the 1980s all three rode for the same Yamaha team!

Best Scot, also by a handsome margin, was Gary MacDonald and the local boy enjoyed a great week, finishing in a fine fifth overall and back to the form that saw him battle for the lead back in 2003. ''That was actually my steadiest ride yet in Scotland, including 2003, I can't wait for next year!'' was Gary's final word.
