After securing the sixth quickest time in the Pro MX1 class, the scene was set for Martin Barr to further improve on his recent results and push for the podium at Hawkstone Park the fifth round of the Michelin MX Nationals.

Barr made a good start with the top riders, though he made a mistake on the second corner, sliding out and losing a few positions. He got caught up with Josh Gilbert going down and had a lengthy battle with Liam Knight before crossing the line in fourth place.

In race two, Barr knew the podium was there for the taking. Again, he made a great start but struggled to find his rhythm and lost a couple of positions as the opening laps clicked off.

Barr had come into the round feeling "under the weather" and wasn't riding to his high standard. Barr made a few errors that allowed Petar Petrov to close and then pass in the closing stages of the moto. Still, the podium was in sight until the final lap when Petrov passed Brad Todd pushing Barr into fourth overall by a solitary point.

The 34-year-old Northern Irishman is currently lying third in the Pro MX1 championship.

"Martin again has been steadily improving round on round getting closer to where we know he can be," said team boss Dylan Brown.

"He was unlucky to narrowly miss the podium this weekend when Petrov passed Todd on the last lap to make him fourth by a single point. He was quickly closing on Todd, and another lap may have secured a podium, though that's all part of racing.

"I'd like to see Martin achieve a podium this season with Apico Husqvarna and we'll be giving him the support to do this in the final races. Regardless of the lack of podiums, Martin is third in the MX Nationals MX1 series and eighth in the Revo ACU British Motocross Championship, though could potentially finish sixth when you look at the points, so we'll be helping Martin try to achieve this too."

Teammate Jamie Law finished third overall in the Pro MX2 to claim his first MX Nationals podium of the season, while Apico Husqvarna's other MX1 rider Stuart Edmonds was back under the awning. However, he decided not to race as his wrist still needs a couple of weeks to heal fully.
