A real Classic finale

The 2017 AMCA/ CDB British Classic Motocross Series ended on a high note at the Llanthony clubs circuit, high in the Black Mountains on the England-Wales border, writes Dave Gittins.

Heavy rain on Saturday, made way for a bright day on Sunday, but the damage was done and the track began to resemble a mud-plug soon after racing started. Nevertheless, although the champions in each of the two categories (Pre-65: Tim Dallaway; Pre-74: Kris Winder) had been decided, there was still plenty to race for in the podium places.

Two important changes occurred in each of the categories. The in-form Tim Dallaway was so far in front of the opposition that he opted not to ride in the two championship races, his position was that secure.

Kris Winder was equally safe but opted to ride and in the process increased his points total by a massive 40 points. Behind them things were much tighter. In the Pre-65 category, Liston Bell edged out Gene Womack, both riders giving a tremendous display of how to ride a big British four-stroke fast on a greasy surface.

Listons brother Lewis pipped the injured Aaron Graves as a result of a better last-round performance. In the Pre-74 category, Keith Rice consolidated his second place behind Kris Winder, but the surprise package in this group was young Greg Speed.

Early in the series Greg was a tad inconsistent, either through mechanical problems or visits to terra-firma. But over the last three rounds he amassed a total of 77 points, enough to take him into third place just ahead of another up-and-coming rider, Sam Nicholls.

A total of 70 riders scored points over the seven rounds, plus a number of others who set out with good intentions, but unfortunately didnt make it to the finish. My sincere thanks to all of you. I am in the process of organising the presentation of trophies (down to sixth place, plus one or two other special awards).

I hope to arrange for the presentation to take place at the Telford Classic Off-Road Show in mid-February. In the meantime, the next important date is Saturday, November 18, for the AMCA Classic AGM and dates meeting at Cannock.

If you want your club involved in the 2018 championship series, or would like to see changes to the format, let me know then.
