IN 18 years the Horsforth Club has raised well over 41,000 for local charities and that figure will rise again after Saturday's annual Bob Owen Memorial Trial at Tong where 114 riders contested the event.
Horsforth club official Barrie Fairburn said after the trial: "We raised £41,424 up to last year. The club started the Bob Owen Trial in 1988, in memory of a former member, an official of the ACU, and an active Leeds man. Bob was a tireless worker in the Horsforth Club.
"This year the cash will be donated to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the Auto Cycle Union's Benevolent Fund."
On Saturday the trial ran over a three lap course for Clubman and Youth classes, while a harder ten section course was ridden by Gomersal winner John Hillam who managed to ride the entire Home Farm course without incurring a single penalty. Teenager Edward McIntosh and Expert Jay Stephenson joined him on the podium.
Steve Fowler won the Novice class ahead of Chris Manby and Montesa-mounted Paul Jackson. Teenager Danny Gamble posted a cracking result on his Beta to finish in second overall ahead of Jack Challoner. Danny was the top Novice while Jack contested Youth A category, beating Jon Chambers and Zac Sherwin in the process.
Patrick Darbyshire headed the Over 40 class on his TLR Honda, but Paul Wilson matched the winner until the very last section on the final lap. Graham Abbey could not produce the result to beat Darbyshire in the Over 40 class and finished in seventh spot but his son Matthew did win Youth A on the Clubman route.
Farmer's son Edward Berry ran away with Youth C ahead of Jack Waddington.
