What about ye? How quickly time can pass between writing these words from month to month is amazing. If only my broken bones would heal as quickly then maybe I'd not just be the one-page wonder of dbr that I have become of late. What about ye? How quickly time can pass between writing these words from month to month is amazing. If only my broken bones would heal as quickly then maybe I'd not just be the one-page wonder of dbr that I have become of late. I think if it were not for my regular monthly page in this mag I would be completely forgotten about in British MX.I was at Matchams for the GP and 50 per cent of the spectators that I spoke to did not seem to be totally up-to-date on my current situation. The common sequence of questions were asked to me as I stood concentrating on watching the race... Why are you not racing? How did you do that? When will you be back racing? Now I agree with the theory that if you want to find something out then ask but surely the bright white cast on my wrist gave a small clue as to why I was not out there! The whole weekend was pretty mega as far as I'm concerned. I really enjoyed the MX2 races and thought Carl Nunn winning the first race was epic. Townley's opening laps in each MX1 race were very impressive and worth watching but sadly that's all I found exciting about MX1.I think I may have possibly fallen asleep at one point only to be woken by some world class nose-diver panic-revving his four-poke to the limiter! The MX2 guys clearly race their bikes where as the MX1 men are more like riding the race. Maybe the bigger 450 machines were too much of a handful for the rough and bumpy track? After all they had all just traveled back from Japan the weekend before but that's not much of an excuse as so had the MX2 boys.I say boys when referring to the MX2 riders and one rider who's clearly a boy is Tommy Searle. I thought he was brilliant at the GP and totally impressed me with his potential that he showed - rock on Tommy! In the week after the GP the Cookstown and District Motor Club presented the Irish media with a press conference for the British championship round they were due to host. I went along to support the club and the sport as I think it is extremely important that the series comes across the Irish Sea each year to the superb Desertmartin track. It doesn't half make me laugh when I listen to some of the riders, mechanics and team members who tell me how far it is for them to travel and how expensive it is. Don't they realise I've had to do that every weekend for my entire career! And that's not forgetting all the other Irish and Northern Irish commuters either who have drove the length and breadth of England for the love of motocross.Again at Desertmartin the dedication of the club was apparent with their immaculate preparation and running of the event. Like at the Matchams GP the MX1 class sent me to sleep and the MX2 boys had me on my toes with the excitement. I guess I would find the MX1 more fun if I was actually riding in the race instead of trying to stay awake while watching it!I was in to have a review with my surgeon on the Monday after that British championship round. Before I went to see him I was very, very nervous and prepared myself to hear some things I didn't want to hear. My wrist had been getting sore and I was worried that there had been some problem with the bone healing. He said the ligament attachment is perfect and at a successful stage of recovery. An x-ray showed very small signs of bone-joining at the scaphoid which to me was good but still not wonderful in terms of riding MX in the next few weeks which is what I'd hoped for really.Nothing in terms of alternative medicine has proved helpful in the past for treatment to speed up the recovery time although many things can halt your progress dramatically. Smoking cigarettes and passive smoking have been scientifically proven to slow the healing time. So naturally I've cut down to 40 a day from 60 to see if that helps! Only joking! You should be aware that the Irish GP is definitely on this year. I attended the press launch in Belfast and think it's super news to have it confirmed through the press. I love this country and would advise booking yourselves over to see why I do.The promoter is focusing on the fans as the priority. He wants to entertain you as opposed to make money out of you. Give him a chance I say. Some more kids earned themselves a day of me coaching them at the second Red Bull training academy. This time I had the pleasure of working with 10 65cc riders who graduated through the selection system of the championship positions.I was proud of the progress they made and I felt each rider had improved their technique in some aspects of their riding. That night I watched them perform in the SX racing which is run in conjunction with the Red Bull training school.I was very sorry to hear the terrible news of Richard Fitch's death while he was racing at Hawkstone recently. My condolences are with the family at this time.Words by Gordon Crockard Photo by Rayarcher.com
