ACU Western Area is pushing youth trials forward

By Press Release on 26th Feb 20

Trials

Youth trials riding is going from strength to strength in the ACU Western area, as its Youth Development Squad celebrates a major award and looks forward to the 2020 season.

This will be the ninth season of the ACU Western Youth Development Squad and seven training days are planned for riders aged five to 18, by squad co-ordinator Simon Welch.

Simon was recently awarded the Datatag Commitment to Coaching Award at the ACU annual awards celebration, for setting up and running the squad to create riders and organisers of the future.

Last year 43 youngsters were trained by ACU-qualified coaches and a similar number from ACU Western and beyond are expected to sign up this year.

Sessions start at 10am with a break for lunch, and finish at 3pm.

This years dates are as follows all are Saturdays other than the long weekend at Longtown.

March 7 - Hayes Coppice. Monmouth

April 11 Bodenham, Leominster

July 31/ August 1 (Friday, Saturday - trial at same venue Sunday) Longtown, Upper Wye Valley

September 5 Barrel Lane, Longhope, Gloucester

October 17 venue TBC

December 12 (with awards presentation afterwards) venue TBC

Sessions cost 5 for ACU Western residents and 20 for non-residents pre-booking is essential.

The squad exists to help riders be the best that they can be, regardless of ability, and to grow the sport of trials, said 12-times ACU Western Trials Champion and National Trial winner Simon, who has been an ACU Coach since 2008.

As usual we will have coaches and groups for all abilities and ages, and we are developing our own coaches too, which is very encouraging.

Costs for riders are kept down by generous sponsors.

As always massive thanks are due to the landowners, clubs and sponsors Kettle Civils, RD Benson Haulage, J Bendall Electrical & Building, and BVM Moto for their ongoing support,

added Simon, who is a teacher by profession. This year I have been offered the use of more venues than we can use as well, which is a healthy position to be in.

ACU Western YDS riders have gone on to compete in the SSDT, European and World Trials Rounds, and many national series, but most important of all enjoy and improve their riding and make new friends with like-minded youngsters.

Many ACU Western clubs are supporting youth trials with conducted trials, and so far one has also introduced a new Sportsman Minus class where youth riders complete less laps of the main trial, to help bridge the gap between conducted trials and the main event.
