Captain Scott! - Dougie takes fifth victory in world's toughest trial

By John Dickinson on 25th Oct 17

Trials Dougie Lampkin Scott Trial

And the win represented a unique double, following on from his Scottish Six Days victory back in May.

These two events are all the 12 -time World Champ has contested this year (apart from a club trial he used as a Scott warm-up) and he came up with two massive wins.

As Doug said: Winning the Scottish and the Scott in the same year is something my dad (Martin) always said was special, so I am very proud to have managed to do this, especially at this late stage in my career.

Yes, it was hard work on Saturday and Doug was the first to admit that even he was really hanging on for the last hour. But no-one in the world hangs on like Doug.

Anyone else would go downhill fast and drop off the pace drastically and lose marks hand over fist.

Not Doug, his iron control saw his level drop from 100 per cent to probably 90 per cent until he had passed the Ends cards in the final section.

Only then would he allow his mind and body to relax and accept that he had given everything he had.And really rubbing salt in the wounds of the regulars Ian Austermuhle took secondplace in The Scott last Saturday. Ian has been concentrating on his new sporting career in MTB for the last 12 months, successfully competing on the Vets circuit and The Scott was something of a one-off trials appearance.

James Stones gives the appearance of taking his trials lightly, the joker in the pack, but the laugh was on his rivals last Saturday as Jimbo rode to Best on Observation and a memorable podium placing for third overall.

James Dabill, Richard Sadler and Iwan Roberts were all pre-trial favourites for top spots and as they packed the top six they were right on the button although Dibsta, last years winner, wont be happy at missing the podium.

Tom Minta nailed the last of the main awards in seventh which was a cracking result from a rider who doesnt take it too seriously and Tom finished with the biggest grin on his face.

Saturdays Scott was definitely a tough one, mainly because the moors were very soft after weeks of rain and virtually every rider in echoed Dougie's first exclamation, That were ard!

It looked like there would be relatively few finishers but there are plenty of tough lads and lasses out there as come the end a healthy 87 managed to finish inside the two-and-a-half hour allowance after Dibstas Standard Time and all credit to all of them.
