Aubin blows ’em away at Duns

Motocross

With bright sun on Saturday followed by high winds on Sunday, the Red Bull Pro Nationals are still at the mercy of Mother Nature.

But round four of the UK's most exciting MX series still managed to fit in two action-packed days of top-flight racing, as it enjoyed a debut foray into Scotland.

The spectacular Duns Motocross facility in the Scottish Borders was the venue and 3,000 fans were treated to five blocks of racing for the rising stars of the Red Bull Elite Youth Cup, plus two Pro motos, as well as three races each for the Open class and 125cc two-stroke pilots.

Following the disappointment of round three at Canada Heights, when the Sunday programme was washed out, the elements were still throwing their weight around.

This time it was high winds rather than heavy rain causing trouble on the Sunday but the riders just gritted their teeth and got on with the job.

The Pro Show is the big draw, with the MX1 and MX2 riders mixing it up in a pair of full-on races on the Sunday and two riders dominating to take a maximum points haul.

In MX1 feisty Frenchman Nico Aubin did the business both times out, despite a couple of gutsy rides from series leader Stephen Sword.

Swordy, still hurting from a big crash in Ireland last month, rode through the pain barrier to keep DT's main man honest, but his recent lack of laps – plus a fading rear brake second time out – proved pivotal.

"It's been a really good day so I'm pretty happy as from the beginning of the season I've been having trouble finding myself,” admitted Nico. "In the first moto I passed nearly everybody coming right from the back.

"In the second I started from maybe third or fourth, made the pass straight away and put in four fast laps before getting bad arm pump.

"From there I was just cruising, keeping an eye behind me as I didn't want to take any risks and crash, so I'm really pleased.”

With Marc De Reuver – who was second overall going into Duns – crashing out of the opener and a non-starter for race two, Swordy had a great chance to extend his lead in the series.

But his 2-3 card meant he only increased his advantage by a single point to eight, as Aubin advanced to second in the standings.
