Toni Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings tied up the MX1 and MX2 world titles respectively with a two-moto win apiece, in the stifling heat of Faenza, Italy, to hand KTM their third consecutive world MX1/MX2 double.

The GP victory, his sixth in a row, and title, a career sixth, held a particularly poignancy for Cairoli: "It's one year to the day since my mama passed away,” said the Sicilian.

"This one was for her – I know she'd be watching over me!”

The weekend had not started well for the MX1 champion as he only earned 14th gate pick.

"My gate bounced and fouled the rear wheel in the qualification race, so the riders either side of me got a jump on me,” he explained.

"Then I collided with Marc De Reuver on the first lap.”

But the GP motos were a different story.

"I gated second to Sebastien Pourcel in the first moto, got around him on lap three and went away,” said Cairoli.

"I had no rear brake for the last ten minutes and had to adjust my lines, so Christophe Pourcel came closer, but I wanted to clinch the title with a win.”

Even though he only needed to head home Clement Desalle to set the seal on his fourth consecutive MX1 title, the Sicilian kept Pourcel at bay and the celebrations could begin – all this despite continued discomfort from the hand he injured at Matterley.

Shaun Simpson, a stunning third in qualification, advanced quickly to fifth and wanted more: "I took too long to pass Sebastien Pourcel (CP377), but I was catching his brother again until I fell,” he said.

"There was no way I could have held off De Dycker though – he came like an express train.”

Indeed he did – ‘Keeno' had been nearly last on lap one after a fall.

Race two followed a similar pattern as ‘CP377' chased Cairoli in vain.

Desalle took fourth to ensure the silver medal in the series, but just six points now separate arch rivals Paulin and Pourcel for third going into the final GP at Teutschenthal and De Dycker, a previous winner at the German track, is only a further 18 back.

Simpson retained his top ten ranking, three ahead of Bobryshev, but both have closed up significantly on Rui Goncalves, a non-scorer after damaging a shoulder-blade and suffering severe concussion.

With top 20 finishes in both motos Jamie Law, Bryan MacKenzie and Graeme Irwin did themselves proud – indeed for each of them it was a career-best MX1 GP result.

Herlings brought a 65-point advantage over Tommy Searle to the race and could have settled for a steady ride on what he described as "...the worst track of the year for me – it's like concrete”.
