YORKSHIRE trials enthusiast Dave Mawer is a man who likes his Montesas.

More to the point he likes his Future Montesas, having owned and ridden several of the Italian-built beauties. So when the chance came to order a Toni Bou replica, Dave was straight in there. And last week he visited the Italian trials and enduro specialist's Bergamo works and personally took delivery of his new pride and joy and brought it back home!

Dave said: "Future is a big trials and enduro dealer, they sell most marques but also have a separate engineering section and a dedicated suspension room.

"It is a really impressive set-up and they are nice guys.”

At the moment, this machine is a one-off, the only one in existence, although Dave says that Future have built several of the special engines.

And the spec of that engine is so secret that even Dave doesn't know what it is.

Future don't wish to release the spec just yet but expect to be able to do so in the near future.

Suffice to say that the capacity is in excess of 300cc and listening to the engine and what appears to be a slower tickover, an educated guess would be that this is no simple overbore and that a lengthened stroke would appear to be involved.

Future start with a standard Repsol spec Montesa and strip it right down to the last nut, bolt, washer and splitpin. Then, there's not a single part that doesn't receive their best attention whether it is to improve overall performance or simply save weight.

To start with, every nut, bolt and fastener is switched for a titanium or aluminium beauty. Dave says he has a box of the original steel components – and it weighs some 3kg. That's just for starters.

The attention to detail is such that the machine features special wheel hubs that incorporate smaller wheel bearings to save extra grammes.

Total weight-saving over standard is in the region of 5kilos which is a whole heap of weight.

The suspension is one area where factory machines score heavily over mass-produced standard equipment and the Future Montesa is no exception.

The front forks here start life as all aluminium Tech units but with totally new internals that Dave understands are as per factory spec.

They feature extra damping adjustment in the fork slider bottoms that solely control the second half of the stroke.
They are set-up for Toni Bou's weight and spec.

Triple clamps are Future billet machined. The rear shock is a Showa but the internals are to factory spec while the rear linkage is also new and reputedly to factory specification.

Brake lines are carbon fibre – which shaves a few more ounces – and are super trick. As stated, the engine spec is secret but features a stronger clutch, a hand-built radiator for improved cooling and improved electrics.

There's certainly a lot more space around the engine compared to a standard Mont and the throttle body is also different to Repsol spec.

There is the two-map switch on the handlebars and an engine-hour display fitted. Inside the motor there are all kinds of secret things which one day we will tell you all about, as Future have promised us the exclusive!

Meanwhile check out the detail in the pics, lots of lovely little finely machined brackets and fasteners and how about that that flat-top fuel tank – just like Toni's!

The piece de resistance has to be the two front engine spars.

They started life as standard Repsol Montesa pieces but have been machined by Future and finished in genuine gold plate – just so you know how special this machine really is!

And Dave hasn't finished yet, this is still a work in progress. In the pipeline are magnesium fork sliders which Dave is having manufactured and machined that will save even more weight and keep this already awesome Future Montesa unique...
