MANY of the big names in northern trials head for Wildboarclough, near Buxton, on Saturday morning for the 59th running of the Northern Experts Trial, including 2005 winner Ian Austermuhle and victor the year prior to Austy's success, Shaun Morris.

Shaun and his Gas Gas UK team-mate Dan Thorpe will be looking to put the pressure on Beta Boy Austie, but the Italian marque will also have TTT teamster Michael Brown in its batting line-up. Throw in Travers supremo Michael Phillipson, Novogar number one Chris Pearson, past winner John Shirt, plus Liam Walker, Mika Vesterinen, 4RT-mounted John Sunter and a brace of Ludgates, and the odds widen dramatically. The unknown, but talented, quantity, will be the up-and-coming Ross Danby, who will be in the mix on his Gasser.

James Dabill and Graham Jarvis will not be present as they are riding in the Indoor Trial des Nations along with Dougie Lampkin.

The Clubman entry comprising Novices, Over 40s, and a sprinkling of Inters, swells the total by 52 (30 of which are Over 40s) on top of the 32 Expert contenders.

The format will follow that used last year, and the year's before that, centred on Wildboarclough but Manchester 17 official Ken Roberts, again clerk of course, and his assistants Damian Andrew and Karl Green have been foraging in the dense rhododrendon bushes dropping into the 'Clough village. Three brand new sections will be known as Eardley's Burden.

The rest of the two-lap 20-section course takes in Clough House, Clough Gully, Cumberland, Danebower, Reeve Edge and Holt Gully. Total mileage for the day's run will be about 17. The weather will dictate the start venue, but it will be either be down in Wildboarclough or at Burnt House Farm at Wincle. Ken Roberts will have the start directions well flagged off the A537 Buxton to Macclesfield road. First man will fire up at 9.30am.

It will be a cracking day's trialling.
