Great Vue for Dibs

TONI Bou delivered a stunning winning double for the large, enthusiastic crowd which turned out for the final round of the 2012 World Trials Championship staged at Nord Vue, near Penrith, Cumbria, last weekend. Repsol Montesas six times world champion was eagerly chased round the 15 section course by a seething scrum of thousands over both days of competition, all eager to appreciate Bous genius on a motorcycle.

The battle for second in the Championship raged all weekend with Adam Raga coming from behind to snatch the vice championship right at the death when Jeroni Fajardo's challenge faded as a shoulder injury sapped the Beta rider's strength. Albert Cabestany's challenge disappeared as the Sherco rider, usually so consistent, despaired in his worst showing of the year.

But for Britain's James Dabill there were celebrations as on the final day of the campaign Dibs nailed his first ever World Championship podium and was understandably over the moon at achieving his dream in front of his home crowd who had supported him all the way.

And it was an excellent weekend for Britain's ever cheerful Youth rider Bradley Cox who kept his nerve under pressure to deliver a pair of well deserved victories which cemented his second place in the series.

The British round was the final event in the 2012 World Trials Championship and fittingly it was one of the best attended with the sandstone quarry, which makes up the Nord Vue venue (known to many northern centre riders as Blaze Fell) packed with trials fans. Toni Bou had already tied-up his sixth world championship but was eager to notch-up yet more victories and fittingly he achieved win number 50 on the second and final day of competition.

The weather was, to put it kindly, changeable with a succession of short, sharp wintry showers blowing in, which on the opening day at least considerably altered the way the sections rode as the sandstone went from offering plenty of grip to resembling blocks of ice. Even Bou succumbed to the gripless conditions and dropped several unexpected and occasionally spectacular, fives.

All 15 sections, lapped twice, were packed close together in the compact venue with some sections set in amongst a sparse wood with others constructed in the main shallow quarry bowl. All were exposed to the elements on the Cumbrian hillside and all featured many large, vertical steps of either natural or carefully placed huge quarried sandstone blocks. Graham Jarvis had actually done a superb job with the sections which tested all three classes.

Bou started out in stunning form and by the ninth section was still only on five marks, assisted by dropping just a single mark on the tough
second hazard, the first in the quarry, which
everyone else had failed on. But then down came the rain and with the rocks still being very green the grip simply disappeared and even Toni
suffered. From section 10 he rapidly clocked-up four fives in five sections, including a spectacular dismount in the 11th section which featured jumping over a tree branch, six foot in the air.

He certainly wasn't alone in clocking up the fives though as absolutely everyone suffered in the
conditions and Bou enjoyed a 13 mark lead over team mate Takahisa Fujinami and Fajardo after the opening lap.

On the second lap, with conditions, and the
sections, having settled down scores tumbled and Bou was expecting to really drop the scores but by his own admission he made "some absurd misakes” and he dropped 18 marks, the same as a confident looking and surprisingly smooth
riding Fujigas. Best on the lap though was Adam Raga on 17 - and the Gas Gas rider was right back in the frame for runner-up in the series having
outpointed Fajardo and Cabestany.

Dabill roared back from an average opening lap of 41 to post 26 second time through and this was very much on the pace. Dibs was really looking the part.

Cabestany finished sixth after one of his worst ever days in the Championship while Jack Challoner fought hard all day for his seventh place, albeit on a three-figure score. Dabill excepted, the Brits all struggled on the course which was very indoor orientated with its never ending succession of brutal rock steps.

Newly crowned world Junior champ Alex
Ferrer shaped well in ninth ahead of Michael Brown and Alexz Wigg who were also victims of the uncompromising sections that could have graced the Barcelona Indoor.

The Junior class saw a photo finish on the day between Spanish Montesa rider Francesc Moret and Beta's Frenchman Benoit Dagnicourt who both contrived to lose 31 points in total with Moret making it a Montesa double victory by17 cleans to 16. Belgian Maxine Warenghien took his Gas Gas to a clear third.

Jack Sheppard was Britain's big hope in class and with Jim Lampkin urging him on made a fantastic start, remaining clean after six sections to hold the early lead. But while it was too much to expect him to keep up that standard, Jack eventually dropped to sixth place, just behind Jotagas factory rider Pol Tarres. There was a trio of British talent packing the lower Championship points though with Ben Morphett, Jack Spencer and Ross Danby separated by just a single point!
