Basically, I got hurt at a supercross in January - I made a mistake and screwed myself up for a while."dbr: Lots of pain?"JC: "***k, yeah!"dbr: Tough recovery time?JC: "Yeah, it sucked. My medical people in America sucked but I got out of there and got sorted out in NZ. The doctors kept saying 'you broke this and you broke that' - all I wanted to know was 'how long?' At one point they told me I'd never ride again."dbr: Determined, ain't ya?JC: "I guess I am. You've got to be determined in motocross or you're gonna lose."dbr: Did you come back as you expected?JC: "Nah, I expected to come back much stronger than I actually did."dbr: But you finished off the season back on the podium...JC: "Yeah, that's where I want to be - I want to win real bad."dbr: What about the rest of your life? What things don't you like?JC: "Two things that really ***s me off in MX and life in general are people who backstab and bull***t about me. I know these things happen in life but it ain't good."dbr: You go home to New Zealand for the winter - you must look forward to that?"JC: "It's great to get back to NZ and relax, switch off and let my mind and body return to something like normality for a few weeks. My new house is just about finished so I'm really looking forward to doing some work on that and getting moved in. It's a 50 acre deer farm and I've got SX and MX tracks there - the place is great for me as I'm a bit of a farm boy really."dbr: Any other sports you enjoy?JC: "The new place is pretty near the sea which is good as I really enjoy watersports - y'know, wakeboarding, water skiing and surfing. I don't get the chance to do these things in Belgium or the UK so it's another reason I like to go home when I can."dbr: So what sort of hobby/training-type things do you do in Europe?JC: "Something I do quite a lot of in Belgium is BMX. Me, Smets and a few others ride at Joel's place - it's great fun and superb for training."dbr: So you live in Belgium during the racing season and also spend quite a lot of time in the UK with your CAS team. How do you find the UK?JC: "I really enjoy racing in the UK - it's one of my favourite places to race - but I'm not really into spending too much time here. There are not many practice tracks and too many traffic jams. Oh, and British championship prize money sucks a fat one! But my team and my girlfriend Lisa are here so that makes it cool."dbr: What does the future hold for you?JC: "Basically, I've got the best job in the world and I just want to work hard, get my preparation correct for next season and get up to challenge Stefan. He's the guy I'm shootin' for and I believe I can run with him. I want that world title before I return to the farm to kick back. That's it, simple as that - I want the title and nothing else. Willy Coppins has had a tough year but I believe that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger."dbr: Anyone you want to thank?JC: "My team, my mechanic and Harry (Ainsworth) for sticking with me and being a straight shooter with no bull***t."dbr: Nice one...cheers for your time Skippy."JC: "I've told you already Paddy, I'm a Kiwi!"dbr: Whatever...
