Motocross

Jack Brunell, mounted on the LPE Maxxis Kawasaki, was the star of the third round of the UK ArenaCross series, staged in front of 6,5000 fans at a packed and throbbing LG Arena, Birmingham, on Saturday evening.

Brunell was unbeaten throughout the night winning both his heats and the grand final.

He also came out on top of the frenetic two-lap head-to-head clashes.

Buildbase Honda's series leader Adam Chatfield, raced to a win and a second in his two heats, plus second overall and second again in the head-to-head and now holds just an eight-point lead in the Championship.

The evening kicked-off with two intense Pro heats and although Neville Bradshaw was fast out of the gate and into the sharp right hander of turn one, Brunell was soon into the lead followed by Putoline Honda's Bradshaw and the solid shape of Eric Sorby in third.

Brunell soon pulled out a handy gap from Bradshaw, with Martin Barr coming through on the VMX KTM to take Sorby and put pressure on Brunell, but in the end they finished in that order.

Chatfield was in action in the second heat, although it was Frenchman Mickael Musquin (Buildbase Honda) who exploded out of the gate and into the crowded first turn.

It was his countryman Charles LeFrancais who hit the front, though, to lead the charge for several laps from reigning champ Tom Church, with Chatfield pushing hard in third. Carl Nunn then took a big crash heading into the quick
right-handed, banked, horseshoe turn and a lap later Chatfield stormed past Le Francois at the same place with a clever move.

Tom Church, looking smooth as ever, then had a slight off as the soft track rutted really quickly and although he was away smartly yet another Frenchman, Cyrille Coulon, took the chance to nip through and they passed the flag as Chatfield,
LeFrancais, Coulon in that order.

Following a breather while the FMX dudes strutted their stuff and the Youth and Rookie races were run, it was time for the final two Pro heats.

In heat three, Damon Strydom went down hard in the first turn and Chatfield again did not make the best of starts as Musquin was quick out the gate.

This race was to be Coulon's race, although, with Musquin initially second before Chatfield came slicing through the pack – but there was to be no catching Coulon.

With just one more heat to go it was LeFrancais, Church, Brunell and Nunn who emerged marginally ahead out of turn one, but Brunell was straight on the case and past Church through the whoops.

This was where he was at his best all night and after chasing Le Francais he raced past the Frenchman at the same place, swooping into the right-hander at the end.
