The mild temperatures of the winter so far has meant that Lommel has been open for practice on a regular basis, but the Belgian sand track has been in a pretty desperate state and, less than a month after Ken De Dycker fractured his wrist at the venue, Kevin Strijbos has joined him on the sidelines with a fractured pelvis.

As in the case of De Dycker, Strijbos collided with a local amateur on the blind side of a jump.

The 28-year-old Rockstar Suzuki star has already been examined by renowned sports injuries surgeon Dr Claes at Herentals Hospital after the incident this morning and scans have revealed that a small portion of his pelvis had broken away. He is expected to be off a bike for a month.

"Obviously I'm pretty gutted about this," admitted Strijbos. "When I got to the face of the jump I saw someone waving but it was already too late to react and I landed with my front wheel just in front of the seat of the fallen bike. It's a setback, and a shame, as my preparations were going really well.

"We had a super-good training week with the team in Portugal and everything was heading in the right direction. Sadly it is one of those things that is a part of our sport.”
