Motocross

The second half of the Maxxis British MX championship kicked off in style at the former GP circuit of Desertmartin in Northern Ireland.

All three championships were turned on their heads as front-runners crashed their way out of contention and allowed some new boys to jump on the podium.

The action was fast and frenetic, the crowd was committed and enthusiastic and the organisers gave us the perfect track to race on...it was a weekend to behold.

Qualifying in any form of motorsport usually sets the tone for the day's racing and MX2 Superpole at Desertmartin could not have been more pertinent.

The Bike-It Cosworth Yamaha pairing of Arnaud Tonus and Zach Osborne headed the opening session from Jake Nicholls but the real action came at the end of Superpole.

Osborne stormed around the full GP-length circuit determined to set a good time but he fell at the final corner and left himself back in 12th.

His day got worse from then on. For the record Tonus set another pole position with a time of 1min 53secs. LPE Henderson Kawasaki star Bryan Mackenzie was second with TAS Suzuki rider Mel Pocock flying in third.

The opening heat was a stormer. East Anglian pairing of Jake Nicholls and Elliot Banks-Browne headed the first lap and both hit the ground running determined to be the first MX2 winner not to come from the Dixon Yamaha camp.

The Dixon boys were floundering in mid-pack and at the end of lap one the title race took a huge turn which very few could have predicted.

Series leader Zach Osborne went down three-quarters of the way round lap one and let an awful lot of riders past before he got going again.

Unbelievably just 100 yards later he was down again after jumping downhill onto a stricken Anthony Reville.
Osborne went down hard and his race and overall chances were gone.

Out front Nicholls (HM Plant KTM) and Banks-Browne on a DB Honda were charging round leaving Mel Pocock to hold firm in third.

Tonus was showing his class by zooming past half the pack before taking Pocock on the very last lap.
The fight for victory was spoiled when Banks-Browne smashed himself hard out back, eventually limping home fourth.
This jumped Tonus and Pocock up to second and third leaving Nicholls to take victory in his first Maxxis event on his return from injury.

Heat two was an Arnaud Tonus benefit as he led from start to finish and consolidated the series points he gained in heat one.

Jake Nicholls was on fire again bombing to second ahead of a tremendous set-to for third.

Bryan Mackenzie, EBB and Mel Pocock were chasing each other from corner to corner enthralling the capacity crowd.
Bry Mac held on for third with Elliot sneaking ahead of Pocock after going back and forth more than once during the heat.
Osborne could not do better than eighth.
