New class is a stroker genius

Next years Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship will feature a two-stroke support class at four of the eight scheduled rounds.

The races will be open to all adult riders on any capacity two-stroke machine over 125cc and will carry full British championship status.

Series promoter ACU Events has purposefully targeted high-profile venues for the races which will follow the MXY2 format of two 18-minute plus one lap motos after a full length qualifying session at each round.

"The idea of including a two-stroke class was mooted back in the middle of the 2016 season but as the series promoter we had to make sure that it will work,” said a spokesman for ACU Events.

"Having had support pledged from various individuals in the motocross industry we are now at a point to go ahead and I am sure there will be some very close racing with some high-profile names taking part.”

MX1 and MX2 championship riders will be eligible to race when the series kicks off at round three of the Maxxis championship at Canada Heights on April 30.

The remaining dates are May 14 (Hawkstone Park), July 16 (Blaxhall) and August 27 (Foxhill).

"I am pleased to see the ACU British Two-stroke Championship open for entries,” said Bob Buchanan, a fervent supporter of two-stroke racing.

"The aim was to have it done by the Dirt Bike Show but the new-look ACU committee has had to work really hard to get it done at all and I thank them for that.

"The up-take on entries so far is superb – I've entered both my riders, Lewis Gregory and Mike Kras.

"If the two-stroke class is as popular as I hope we will be able to run a 125cc class for the youth as well which will hopefully encourage more youth riders to stay in the sport past 85cc big-wheel instead of leaving because parents can't afford to run a 250F.”

Registration is now open with further details available from Sonia Goggin on 01788 566404 or via email at Sonia.goggin@acu.org.uk

The MXY2 series that also runs alongside the Maxxis championship will revert to its tried and tested five-round formula.
