JUST one mark separated Liam Walker and Sam Ludgate, at the conclusion of the Ilkley Motor Club's annual New Year Trial at Dob Park on Sunday, after two testing laps of the Washburn Valley course.

Ilkley's clerk of course, Nick Pullan and his team laid out 20 sections which, even after the heavy rain leading up to the trial, were just about exactly right for a record 41 Expert and Hard course contenders and a further 80 Clubman entries.

Jack Challoner topped the Youth A awards on his JLI Beta but he was lucky to be able to ride after pulling chest muscles last week. His anti-inflammatory drugs were the key to his third place overall.

Glen Scholey, a former winner of the Ilkley Grand National trial on many occasions, won the Novice class from Zac Sherwin and Sheffield visitor Lewis Black.

Teenager Jordan Hayes won the Clubman Youth B award on his JLI Beta and, with his parents, then set off back home to Aberdeen. Jordan was on a double mission to ride in a Yorkshire trial, and collect a nice new shiny JLI Beta from chief Beta UK mechanic, Chris Griffin, who was also competing in the event. Griffin was logging trials hours on the new Beta four-stroke trials bike.
