IT was a night of firsts at round seven of the AMA supercross series at San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium as Yamaha's Chad Reed benefited from a heavy fall by race leader James Stewart to claim his first, much needed, victory of the season in the Supercross class while Pro-Circuit Kawasaki's Ryan Villopoto continued his dominance of the west coast Lites class to take his sixth win of the season and claim his first ever AMA supercross title in the process.

Over 60,000 fans piled into the enormous southern Californian stadium to witness the action unfold in what has been pretty much a Kawasaki dominated series so far and early in the Supercross main it looked very much like Stewart would take another win for the marque as he quickly worked his way into the lead, but just after posting the fastest lap of the race, Stewart got it all wrong on the finish double and was forced to bail out in mid-air, taking a heavy landing in the process.

Reed capitalised and cruised through to take the win from Stewart's team-mate Tim Ferry and Honda's Kevin Windham while Stewart recovered to finish fifth from outside the top-ten.
