Teut sweet for Searle

Tommy Searle ended his MX2 GP career on a high note, with a clear-cut double victory at Teutschenthal in Germany.

But the ultimate star of the day was Toni Cairoli, as the Sicilian celebrating his 27th birthday with a seventh straight GP victory – silencing the German gallery by out-running Max Nagl and Ken Roczen on their home turf.

There was joy and frustration in the UK camp.

Searle's maximum confirmed his runner-up world ranking and Jake Nicholls saw off Jordi Tixier for fourth in the series, but a late pass by Zach Osborne denied the East Anglian his first GP podium finish.

A hospitalised Steve Dixon missed a double podium for his team as the American and Arnaud Tonus flanked Searle on the box.

Shaun Simpson was the only man to race with the KTMs in MX1 during qualification, but the Scot twice got tangled-up early in the points-scoring races, to miss a top ten world ranking by a single point.

The final Searle versus Herlings showdown of the summer was soon over.

"It just cut out, I've got no idea what it was, but I'm glad it happened here, not in Italy. That would have been stress,” admitted the Dutch teenager after his KTM quit under him early in race one.

Thankfully it happened as he dived downhill and not over one of the massive jumps.

But it is doubtful he would have had much for Searle.

The Brit had already dominated qualification and soon took over from a hole-shotting Elliott Banks-Browne with a scintillating inside pass off the biggest drop-off in the valley.

"We're mates and I didn't think he'd block me,” he said.

The race was halfway over before Osborne could find a way past ‘EBB' and a lap later, with the podium beckoning, the Roczen's KTM expired to leave the American chasing the Brit.

There was just three seconds in it at the chequered flag as Searle "...tightened up. I was in front but it was a difficult race.”

Nicholls had completed a British 1-2-3 out of the gate but quickly found himself pushed back to sixth.

"I made a real mess of the first few turns and took too long to get round Teillet,” said Nicholls.

"Tixier was gone and it's always difficult to make up time around here.”

The eight-point advantage for fourth in the series rankings was down to six.
