Whatley sinks a treble

The last three domestic motocross championship titles of 2013 were decided on Sunday at the historic Farleigh Castle venue in Wiltshire and what a fantastic day of racing it was.

MBO Sport Yamaha rider Kristian Whatley clinched the MX1 title after the second of three races – to add to the Red Bull Pro National and British Masters titles he had already secured this season.

But he left the best race of his year – or perhaps his whole career to date – to the final moto of the day.

HM Plant KTM's Elliott Banks-Browne successfully defended his MX2 title in style and with a race in hand while some bad luck influenced his closest rivals.

The iconic Farleigh ‘old school' track was in excellent condition considering the amount of heavy rain that fell in the area on Thursday, which left the paddock almost under water.

The evidence of this was still apparent when the riders started arriving on Saturday, but on race day the sun shone and it was almost like summer again.

Luke Hawkins was lightning
fast out of the start gate all weekend and led the first of the MX1 races round the oak tree at the start of the 20-minute plus two-lap race.

But by the end of the lap the on-form Whatley had found his way ahead of the young rider and was on his way to his first moto win of the day.

Nicolas Aubin – having his last ride on a Buildbase Honda – gated third but was passed on the opening lap by team-mate Brad Anderson and STR KTM teamster Matiss Karro.

Whatley's only real challenger for the title, Jonathan Barragan was down in ninth and struggling with the slippery track. On lap four Barragan fell and slipped further back into 14th place – where he finished – his hopes of becoming champion all but gone.

With two laps to go Hawkins started to fade, allowing Anderson through into second, as Aubin put on a late charge for third, Hawkins held fourth and Karro sixth.

Hawkins again got the holeshot in moto two, and again Whatley ousted him on the opening lap for the lead. This time Anderson went down, dropping from fifth to 16th place.

Meanwhile, Karro – from seventh off the start – passed Hawkins by the end of the second lap but could do nothing to close in on race leader Whatley. Aubin overhauled a flying Hawkins on lap four and finished third behind Karro, while Krestinov, who was still suffering from average starts, battled through from 14th to fourth ahead of Alex Snow.

After starting third Barragan had an up-and-down race, dropping back to eighth and ending the race sixth, just one place in front of the re-mounted Anderson.

But Whatley won the race and with it was crowned 2013 Maxxis British Motocross champion.

The new champ said: "What a relief to do it with a race in hand. It's unbelievable as I have been fighting for this all year. I have been dreaming about this moment all my life and it's finally here.

"The start made it a whole lot easier and I knew Luke couldn't keep up the same pace as me, so I just pulled away.

"When Matiss moved into second, I just maintained the gap and even pulled away towards the end. After last season I would have been happy with just one championship, but winning all three of the major national series is unbelievable.”

However, if you thought the excitement in the MX1 class was over for the day you would have been mistaken.

The best race was saved till last as Whatley was taken out in a first-turn pile-up that resulted in Karro dashing into the work area for some repairs and Aubin returning to his race truck.

Whatley's front brake calliper had been ripped off its mounting and was just hanging beside the forks. and most riders would have called it a day – but not Whatley.

He stormed into the work area where his mechanics cut the calliper off, sending him back out on the hilly circuit with just a rear brake.

While Anderson and Krestinov fought over the lead, Whatley carved his way through the pack taking rider after rider in his bid for the ninth place which would give him the overall he so wanted.

However, as the flag fell for the end of the race, Anderson was the winner ahead of Krestinov, Snow, Barragan and Nathan Parker.
