Tetley Trophy Trial: Hemingway, Crosswaite and Thorpe battled it out at Fellbeck – report

Trials

Ben Hemingway nailed the Tetley Trophy on Sunday at a cold Fellbeck where Wetherby staged the third trial in the Yorkshire Centre Championship series.

Cold it certainly was at Kingstone Farm where 14 hardy observers braved an icy breeze but the competition was red hot with 78 competitors in three groups covering the Expert course and Clubman A and B routes.

Three of the big names of Yorkshire trialling were top on the Experts: Hemingway, Martin Crosswaite and Dan Thorpe.

Sam Yeadon hung onto the trial leaders until incurring a five penalty in section eight in Burtons where nine claimed a five from Thorpe. That penalty allowed Crosswaite some breathing space.

Thomas Housecroft and Louis Haley headed the Inters in a tight conflict but sections eight and nine again played a major role with Haley working well in the eighth then stopping in the ninth.

The Novices was won by Charlie and finishing seventh in such company.

Clubman A victor Jamie Stephenson came to halt in two when the chain split link on his Montesa machine.

A rival loaned Jamie his own machine to head a mile back to parc ferme to get a spare link and within 15 minutes man and machine were moving, to a class victory.

Stephenson Junior, Henry, won the Youth B riding his TRS machine to record a family double, while Clubman B went to centre and group champion Howard Gulley despite pressure from Rob Hardisty and veteran John Maxfield, Maxfield demonstrating just what can be achieved with a well-prepared 50 year old BSA Bantam.

The Burtons sections, from eight to to 13 were mild compared with recent events when the ground was wet and even one on the north escarpment was on the easy side in all three classes. Maybe the near vertical climb out of the stream at four was hard but was cleaned on all three laps by Housecroft and Gamble.
