Malcolm Rathmell: Hook team congratulations

Just a quick follow up to my little rant in last weeks paper.

What a great day we had at last weekend's first British championship at Hook Woods. I must congratulate firstly the ACU, John Collins and Jim Connor for doing a brilliant job in their observer briefing and in the final instructions to the riders.

Secondly, to the section organising team, especially Sam Connor, for the great job of making all sections no-stop and wide enough to get a bus through! Thirdly, and most importantly, the observers, yes a thankless task but what a great job they did: positive, accurate and consistent, giving the benefit to the rider if they were not 100 per cent sure but giving the correct marks if riders stopped. They were not hard, just correct in their judgment.

I honestly didn't think I would see the day at a modern day British championship where everything would come together perfectly with no moaning and groaning from many different corners. Again a big congratulations to everyone and let's hope we can all continue through the rest of the championship with the same commitment from all concerned... It can be done!

Again I would like to stress that if the observing is done correct as it was last Saturday at Hood Woods it completely stops any aggro with the riders. As I said last week if the riders are marked correctly they are happy. What they don't like is one rider getting one second, the second rider another two seconds and so on. A stop is a stop, five marks end of story and it worked perfectly.

Down to you Birks!
