Take a look: Harry Stanistreet’s Drayton Ariel

Trials Take A Look

WE know that Jim Pickerings Drayton frame, originally designed for a BSA Bantam engine, has proved uniquely versatile, easily adapted to BSA four-stroke singles - C15 and B40 - and a variety of Villiers two-strokes fit easily.

Even Triumphs beefy big twins have been shoe-horned in.

But its a pretty safe bet that this is the only time that an Ariel Arrow 250cc two-stroke twin has powered a Drayton. No surprise that the man who did it is Harry Stanistreet, whose well-known Arrow-engined Zundapp has been around for some three and a half years.

Harry (reluctantly - he said it was a lot of work) built this model for Andy Webb a couple of years ago which was eventually sold-on to Garry Shaw who rode it in the opening 2018 KIA round run by Aqueduct Classic.

One of the problems with the Arrow motor is that it is suspended from above, not bolted in from below, and so a second top tube is necessary to get a suitable mounting point. We can only guess at the amount of work that went into this which was confirmed when we talked to the ingenius Harry who commented, I wont be making another!
