THE WP-supported Elite Youth Cup series brought the schoolboy motocross season to a resounding finale at the beautifully prepared Canada Heights circuit, near Swanley, Kent, in what can only be described as the most successful Youth Motocross event this country has ever seen. Despite most of the championships being as good as decided, the crowd was entertained by some thrilling racing across all classes. And, to top the season in style, many of Britain's top Pro riders gave their support to what should be a taster of things to come for next year's ground breaking Pro and Red Bull Elite Youth Cup Series.
In the Junior 65cc class, the season's best riders ran the show once more. Champion elect, Ben Green won heat one at a canter after title rival, Danny Lanfear, crashed on the opening lap. The pair then exchanged wins in the next four races, showing a clean pair of heels to the rest of the field.
Green and Lanfear actually produced some of the best races of the year, especially in heats two and three where the outcomes were decided on the very last lap. Green secured his title on Sunday morning and promptly won the overall ahead of Lanfear who truly did push him all the way. On the day Todd Kellett recorded five top- five finishes which were good enough for 186 points and the third place trophy. Local lad Alfie Bowtell had some cracking battles with the brightly helmeted Ryan Snaith over both days and nicked fourth overall, 180 points to 177.
The Small-wheel division is always an ultra competitive class. Suzuki front-runner, James Dunn, confirmed his championship crown with two classy wins in the opening two motos ahead of Ben Watson. Dunn then sat back and watched Watson take a win and then Cheshire flyer Adam Sterry deservedly grab heat four honours.
Dunny' nailed the final race of the weekend to win the overall trophy and cap his year's work.
Liam Garland held himself together to score a healthy 189-points for the final podium spot, and this was sufficient to stave off Watson for second in the series. Sterry's heat four victory bumped him up to fourth although things may have been different were it not for a purler of a crash while leading heat one.
Brad Pocock grabbed the bragging rights in Big Wheel 85cc with a hard-fought victory over championship rival Luke Hawkins. Pocock book-ended his weekend with two gate-to-flag triumphs while having to put in workmanlike results in the middle three heats because of bad starts due to a slipping clutch.
Hawkins won those three races and looked every inch the champion, riding with grace and elegance, while being devilishly fast. The pair have been a cut above in 2008 and have truly made the Big-wheel class one to watch.
Ryan Houghton made a welcome return to form. He looked fast throughout, especially in the final moto when he kept Hawkins at bay, and will no doubt be looking to win this crown in 2009. Jamie McCanney switched from KTM to Honda power at the weekend and it did him no harm at all as he ousted fellow Honda-mounted riders Jansen Day and Ali Meadows.
