No challenge to Challoner

JACK Challoner delivered the goods on Sunday at Dob Park where the Repsol Beta rider won the opening round of the British Youth Trials Cham-pionship from Adam Jones and Josh Woods.

The 16-year-old was in a class of his own and finished the two-lap event in Dob Park and Browns Wood 21 marks ahead of Jones who had the full weight of Team Rathmell behind him. John Lampkin was also on hand to watch his number one national Youth contender take the opening round.

The expected challenge from Jonathan Richardson did not materialise when he suffered rear brake problems and the 15-year-old slumped to eighth place. He damaged a hydraulic hose and it had to be changed. That cost time, so Jonathan rushed around on his second lap.

The Mike Hinch-devised course was testing and very even in severity. Richardson was only ten marks away from second place despite his mechanical problems.

Youth B was also dramatic with Norwich rider, Jack Sheppard, just managing to hold off the Yorkshire ace, Richard Sadler, who kept his head while others struggled.

The other half of the Mirfield contingent, Josh Maude, did what the pundits predicted, produced a fine ride to take third place. Of the Tykes, only Sadler, Maude, Thomas Stewart and Leeds rider Chris Hunt managed to score championship points.

Sheppard can really put on the style, considering he comes from the flat lands of East Anglia and, like last year, Jack practiced hard at Fellbeck on Saturday under the eyes of host Norman Shepherd who gave some guidance. Master Sheppard and his father, Mark, appreciated Norman's input to the victory ride.
