Scottish on the move?

THE organisers of the Scottish Six Days Trial are constantly looking to the future of the event, which takes place each year in the first full week in May, and one factor that they have found becoming more and more difficult is the management of the West End car park in Fort William which is used as the parc ferme for the duration of the event.

This year's incessant bad weather highlighted some of the disadvantages with the lochside venue as it must be one of the most exposed start areas in the trials world! Another major problem, with the West End facility full of trials competitors, factory support trucks, traders etc, is car parking and this has got to the point of detracting from the general competitor and spectator experience.

With this in mind, the SSDT committee is currently considering a move to the Nevis Rural Complex – this location is within a few miles of Fort William, offering under-cover facilities for the parc-ferme, under-cover areas for traders, a café, toilets, offices and plenty of free car parking.

There is also the possibility to provide on-site parking for camper vans and also other services such as a pressure washing bay.

Of course, taking the core of the event out of the town centre will undoubtedly impact on the town itself and the general atmosphere that the SSDT brings to Fort William; so the club will not be taking any knee-jerk decisions without fully considering all of these points.

In the meantime, the committee would like to consult with anyone who has an interest or personal view on the possibility of a move. If anyone has any views please get in touch with the SSDT committee or contact: mark@ssdt.org
