MATCHING its record 79-rider entry for the 2005 Welsh Classic Expert trial, the Rhayader club in Mid Wales produced yet another very well received 30 section course spread over eight groups on Saturday.

At least the Expert Pre-65 class, all 27 of them, made it look rather easy, with just Phil Alderman and Mark Spencer opening their accounts with one mark each, and all were clean on section two.
A different story at group two, Cefnllyn, where Neil Gaunt eased into the lead with the only clean ride through all four sections followed by Duncan MacDonald, Martyn Wilmore and 2005 winner, John Maxfield, on two each.
Clean into group three at Cross Keys, Gaunt left the group on eight and immediately out of the running as Maxfield cleaned all four, Wilmore added three and MacDonald ten, as regular favourite Dave Thorpe who recorded an unexpected failure in group two headed for double figures with a three.
