Bou-siness as usual

The opening round of the 2011 SPEA FIM World Trials Championship took place in Gefrees, Germany, last Sunday and by the end of the day it was the usual suspects in all three classes.

Beta's promising Brit Jack Sheppard also proved that a week in Scotland does you no harm at all with a convincing victory over a trio of Spaniards in the Youth class.

The trial proved to be a genuine success with the crowd treated to a longish lap containing a pretty good mix of sections, many set on a steep hillside, a group in a quarry and just one man-made hazard at the start finish area. Rain on Saturday evening made for slippery conditions and a testing and interesting trial in all classes. The top five riders in the World continued to dominate.

Already the pattern for the season seems set with Bou up front with Albert Cabestany (Sherco), Takahisa Fujinami (Montesa), Adam Raga (Gas Gas) and Jeroni Fajardo (Ossa) tripping over each other behind.

Cabestany nailed the runner-up berth on this occasion with a steady two laps while Fujinami jumped into third with the lowest lap score of the day, just eight marks, compared to the 11 of Bou, through the 15 sections.

For Scottish Six Days winning Brit James Dabill, on the factory Beta, his sixth place was tempered by the fact that he was a yawning 27 points adrift of Fajardo in fifth and Dibs will want to reduce that gap rapidly in the coming rounds.

Michael Brown and Dougie Lampkin, still suffering the effects of his Scottish ankle injury, took their Gas Gas's to top 10 berths while Jack Challoner and Alexz Wigg proved exactly how hard the sections were by posting three-figure cricket scores.

Spain ruled supreme in the well-supported Juniors with Gomez taking maximum points, mainly through a stunning opening lap when he lost half the marks of his rivals.

Fellow Montesa rider Francesc Moret returned the compliment on the second lap but Gomez didn't panic to run out a comfortable winner from Moret, Pere Borellas and Pol Tarres, the Gas Gas pilots separated by just a single mark.

Jonathan Richardson was the sole British entrant in the class and the tall Sherco-mounted Yorkshireman took seventh, an impressive second-lap score unable to haul him further up the table following an expensive opening lap.
