MIDLANDER Chris Denney, out on a 173 BSA instead of his usual Famous' James, was overall winner of the South West Classic as association's three-day Exmoor trial in the West Country over the Easter weekend.

He won the Two-stroke class by more than 30 marks, but overall hewas only a single mark ahead of Unit Construction victor Steve Hay.

Dry conditions prevailed throughout the weekend, but that was littlecomfort for Dave Freemantle who fell and broke his wrist on the openingday, Mike Burton who retired on the second day with a thumb injury orRoger Morgan, who broke a finger when he was in second place in hisclass.

The 23rd annual event kicked-off on Saturday afternoon at Crowcombe,in West Somerset, where a three figure line-up faced three laps of adozen sections at Roebuck Farm.

On the main route a deep, narrow slot in the tenth sub claimed mostmarks but at the end of the day Steve Hay in the Unit class, ChrisDenny in the Two-stroke class and Cheshire's Steve Davies and MartinGilbert in the Twin-shocks emerged with clean sheets, whilst Colin Moteled the Pre-Unit class with a three mark debit. Next in-line were RogerMorgan on four and Richard Whitebread, from Rochester, Kent, on five.

On the alternative route, a cambered climb over tree roots in thelast sub proved to be the major mark stealer but nevertheless TrevorWall in the Twin-shocks escaped penalty.
