TONI BOU took a giant stride towards retaining his SPEA FIM World Trials Championship when he led home Takahisa Fujinami for a Repsol-Montesa one-two at St Michel de Maurienne, France last Sunday. With Adam Raga finishing down in a surprise lowly sixth place, Bou now holds a 21 point Championship lead - from team-mate Fujinami, who leap-frogged the Gas Gas pilot - with just three rounds to go.It was a tough event in France (near the Italian border) made harder after heavy rain Saturday afternoon adversely affected the sections on the steep hillside course forcing the organisers to alter virtually every section. Because of this riders were allowed to inspect the sections on the opening lap (not normally allowed under 2010 rules) and an extra 20 minutes was added to the time allowance.

WORLD

The main group to cause trouble were the main spectator group, sections six to ten, and comprised long, technical climbs over some fierce solid rock slabs on what had been a steep dusty hillside but which turned rapidly to mud. Even Bou dropped three fives in a row on sections six, seven and eight as the sheer rock climbs proved all but impossible.
Dougie Lampkin, on his way to a stirring fifth place, dropped five fives in a row, which only highlighted just how tough the sections were.

At the end of the opening lap Bou was in the lead but only by two marks from Beta's Jeroni Fajardo who continued his improved season. Fuji was third on 34 and Doug fourth on 37 just ahead of Sherco's Albert Cabestany one more mark astern. The big loser was Raga who parted with nine fives including a run of seven consecutive failures and a total lap score of 46 . This contributed mightily to his sixth placing on the day which cost him second in the championship.
The second lap was run under better conditions but after the rain the fierce sunshine and consequent heat was proving to affect most of the riders. Bou had everything back under full control and his lap of 13 was concluded without a single failure. Fuji was also on the boil, looking to repeat his popular victory in Scotland and although he dropped two fives his score of 18 was enough to jump him into the runner-up berth. Fajardo slipped to third but his lap of 25 was enough to net him a welcome podium placing ahead of Cabestany, Lampkin and a disconsolate Raga.

Said Lampkin, "It has been tough out there with the conditions and the heat but I am happy with my fitness and my riding. Fifth was OK but fourth or third would have been better. I am looking at nailing sixth in the Championship which would be a result considering I missed two rounds in Japan.”

James Dabill finished seventh on the day, some 30 marks adrift of Dougie while it was a traumatic day in the saddle for Michael Brown and Alexz Wigg. Michael finished 12th and Wiggy 14th, Alexz seeing the Ends cards just six times during the day.

With just three rounds remaining, San Marino, Italy and the Czech Republic nothing short of a DNF can rob Bou of the 2010 title now.
