Hitachi KTM fuelled by Milwaukee take Positives from Lommel 2

The Hitachi KTM fuelled by Milwaukee team entered the 14th stop on the 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship calendar without Conrad Mewse.

Mewse picked up tonsilitis over the weekend, so the smart decision to skip the Grand Prix of Limburg was made. Bas Vaessen and Adam Sterry represented the squad at the event and made steps forward in their respective classes.

Vaessen showed incredible speed at the first Lommel round and was eager to capitalise on that at Lommel 2, but poor luck caused him to start on the back foot in the first MX2 moto. Vaessen crashed on the start straight, in an unavoidable incident, and picked himself up in dead last.

Not to be deterred, he jumped up and began to charge after the riders ahead. 13th was his final ranking in the moto, an incredibly impressive ride, and he again set times that were competitive with those pushing for a spot in the top five.

The second moto got off to a stronger start for Vaessen, as he completed lap one in eighth and then locked into battles with those around him. Eighth was actually where he ended up in that second moto, so he tied his season-best moto finish! A positive way to end another heavy day in the bottomless sand. 11th overall was his ranking and he now runs 16th in the championship standings as well. It is likely that he will enter the top 15 on Sunday.

Bas Vaessen: I think it was another good day, as far as my riding was concerned. I just had some bad luck in the first moto with crashing at the start and having terrible arm pump with ten minutes to go. I had a good start in the second moto and good times while following [Jago] Geerts. Sunday will be a good day I think.

There were positives for Sterry, the premier-class rider on the team, to pull from the Grand Prix of Limburg. An incident in moto one left him too far down to gain points, but a strong start in moto two meant that he was able to put six points on the board. A 15th in that tied his season-best moto finish and left him in 19th overall on the day. Sterry now sits in 27th in the championship standings and has an opportunity to gain more ground at the next round.

Adam Sterry: I just want to get some momentum and today was better. I had a good qualifying session and a decent start in the first race, as well as some good opening laps. I had a big crash in the waves and the bars were bent, so I pulled into pit lane and got them straightened out. I was too far out to get points, but I rode around and tried to learn from the top guys. The second moto was better, so I am looking forward to going again on Sunday.

The Grand Prix of Lommel on Sunday, October 25, will mark the end of the Belgian triple header and act as round 15 of the 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship.
