A classic season for Dowell - 2006 Classic review

LIKE all good stories, the 2006 British Classic Scrambles championship went right to the wire. But after two fast and furious races at the legendary Hanbury Scramble in Worcestershire it was Piers Dowell who emerged victorious. A disappointed Carl Pope, the runner-up in 2005, had to settle for second place again.

Like earlier series, the 2006 championship, sponsored by Mortons the publishers of "The Classic MotorCycle”, consisted of five rounds, each with two championship races in the programme. Each event is by invitation – the best 30/35 riders in the entry on Pre-68 machines (regardless of capacity) being invited into the event.

In keeping with tradition it was the excellent Mortimer club who set the 2006 ball rolling. Their scramble on May 14 included the first round with further rounds following on June 11 at Upavon in Wiltshire courtesy of Bath Classic, July 16 at Hawkstone Park (Shropshire Classic), August 6 at Rhayader in Central Wales (Mid-Wales Classic), and Hanbury, Worcestershire organised by the Moseley (Birmingham) and District club. Five rounds, ten races and the best eight scores to count towards the final points total.

Riders aged 50 plus have their own contest (within the championship) which was scored separately.
