Close encounters - British MX2 review

Motocross

IF YOU thought the British MX1 Motocross Championship was a bit of a one-horse race with Ken de Dycker running away with the title after his team-mate Josh Coppins took himself out of the equation, injured early doors, nothing could be further from the truth in the MX2 championship.

Two of our best and well established stars, reigning champion Carl Nunn and arch-rival Billy MacKenzie were joined by the young whipper-snapper Tommy Searle in what proved to be one of the closest and most entertaining domestic championships for many years.

GP Dutch star, Marc de Reuver joined the Maxxis circus at the opening round at Cadders Hill, Lyng, in Norfolk, in March last year, and all the good money was obviously on him to set the sand alight.

However, it was Cumbrian Wayne Smith who dominated timed training, throwing his gauntlet down to all the pre-series ‘favourites'.

But, Dutch sand master De Reuver doesn't win timed training, he does win races however. After his holeshot in race one, the amiable Marc swept to the first win of the season from the champ Nunn in second.

Wayne Smith carried his good early season form onto the podium in third place after a titanic battle with the arm-pumped MacKenzie who, in turn, JUST held off Searle in fifth.
