Great Brit Searle

By Alex Hodgkinson on 24th Aug 12

Motocross

The Matterley GP was the Battle of Britain and Victory in Europe Day rolled into one, as Tommy Searle came out on top of two titanic struggles with Jeffrey Herlings.

"Pressure to win is always tough to do it at home, but I didn't want to let anyone down,” said an ecstatic Searle.

"Jeffrey closed up in both motos, but I knew I couldn't lose it for the fans!

"It's a long shot for the title, but a win like today is a big consolation.”

And with Zach Osborne back on the podium, Jake Nicholls and Arnaud Tonus taking top six placings and points for Max Anstie, Elliott Banks-Browne and Lewis Tombs in MX2 – plus Kevin Strijbos, Shaun Simpson, Nico Aubin, Alfie Smith, Gert Krestinov, Alex Snow, Graeme Irwin, Kristian Whatley and Jamie Law in MX1 – there were points aplenty for the UK regulars.

The MX1 class winner? Toni Cairoli, of course!

Searle had only earned sixth choice on the gate after a fall in qualification, but Kawasaki No.100 launched out of the gate to take an immediate lead and leave it to Herlings to chase for once.

"Unreal. Two good starts in one day, and I could hear the fans all around the track,” enthused Searle.

However, he couldn't relax until the final half-lap in each moto as Herlings, who a fortnight earlier had declared his intention to win in the ‘Lion's Den', ran him down.

The Dutch teenager was quickly second in race one, but seemed to have no answer as Searle upped the tempo six laps in and the race seemed run.

But Herlings dug deep again, dropped his lap times below two-minutes and charged back onto the leader's rear wheel.

"I could hear his engine as I braked and he was revving with the clutch in and the fans told me that he was close, but I just rode my own race,” explained Searle.

Halfway round the final lap Herlings had to try something, but his attempt to get close enough for a pass was his downfall.

"I just went a little over the limit, but I have learnt a lot about tracks like this during the last 12 months,” admitted a meek Dutchman. "But the fans were cool. I didn't expect that,” he added.

Osborne was on a charge during the early laps after a moderate start, to indicate what might have been if he hadn't got hurt in March.

"They had good speed, but I closed them down,” he said.

"Not many people can say that this year. I knew I couldn't keep it up for 35 minutes, but it's a start.”

Nicholls, meanwhile, had to run down Lieber and Ferrandis for fourth.

"Everyone was going so fast in those early laps and I just didn't have the speed to make a pass until the track got a little rougher,” he admitted.

Tonus advanced from outside the top ten for sixth at the flag, and Banks-Browne rode a solid race just outside the top ten, but Anstie's Gariboldi machine left him 27th on lap one and he quit completely
mid-moto.

The UK wild card all battled hard just outside the points, Tombs missed a score by just four seconds, with James Cottrell in his wheel-tracks and Hamish Harwood just two further back after a solid ride.

Searle again led from turn one in race two, but could never pull away as first moto faller Van Horebeek held off Herlings for six laps.
