Scramble to victory

Motocross

Kendal Classic Clubs Nostalgia Scramble sponsored by H & H Classic Ltd and Coniston Brewery Company, at Holme Farm, Middleton, near Sedbergh, Cumbria was hit by the expected wet weather.

But the popular track stood up remarkably well to the rain and the riders put on a tremendous show of speed and skill which at times was breathtaking in the conditions.

First-up were the Goldies and Tribsas of the Pre-60s and young Scot Lewis Bell was simply too quick for the more established riders of these big heavy machines.

Andy Carter was second after mediocre starts and pre-race favourite Pete Hollinshead third from a charging Peter Jackson.

John Dallaway was the quickest rider in the 350cc BSA dominated Pre-65 up to 350cc class, but a no-points-scoring race three prevented a likely win and the consistent Carl Woolaston was there to take advantage followed by Barry Townend.

Local rider Steve ‘Smoothie' Dent's chain derailed when leading race two and his chances were gone.

Tim Dallaway just got the better of Tim Manton in the bigger Pre-65 class in some very quick racing, with Liston Bell from Edinburgh a really excellent third.

After swapping from his Triumph Metisse to the lighter unit construction BSA, Tim Dallaway was again just too quick in the Pre-70 class, but this time it was big Carl Pope doing the chasing, with John Cash third.

Gareth Challinor struck bike trouble when well placed in race two.

Derek Macauley from Arbroath on his Bultaco did the seemingly impossible in the Pre-75 up to 250cc and beat all the Honda Elsinores, but only after Chris Storey had a mishap in race three when well in the lead.
