Guy's cracking firework show

NOVEMBER 5 is usually well remembered for colourful and explosive displays of fireworks. On Sunday, the Northallerton club's Bilsdale Trophy Trial did not disappoint.

The start was from the popular venue of the Sun Inn, Bilsdale, and winner Guy Kendrew, from nearby Faceby, brought his own particular brand of fireworks to this event and managed to blow the opposition away.

Not that it was as easy as the final score might suggest, as there was never more than a couple of marks between himself and Dave Pye right up to the final group of sections. The double rock step sections observed by Tonia Carr and Keith Sleightholme both caught Pye for fives while Kendrew stay clean to give him the winning margin and a deserved victory.

With perfect weather conditions and some great sections plotted by Bill Pye and helpers, the scene was set for a full day of competition. Duncan McDonald was the first man to break the quiet in the valley on his Tiger Cub, proving early numbers were no disadvantage as he kept well to the front all day.

The first group on land high above the Sun Inn didn't bother the top runners, with Lincolnshire rider Pete Marris, Ayton's Phil Mayfield, Kendrew and Pye all staying clean, while Ian Hopley and Chris Barnfather had cautionary ones. In the Clubman ranks Mark Doughty was clean, followed by Jack Stones and Mark Summer on a dab apiece. Summer, now riding regularly again, is coming back to something like his best form.

It wasn't until the fifth group of sections, at Lockton, that Kendrew and Pye lost their first marks and they did so in a big way, both fiving the wickedly difficult rock waterfall. Only five cleans were recorded all day on this particular section, Nick Coleby's ride being the pick of them. Mark Harrison and Hopley were up with the leaders, only two adrift.
