Iddon scorches to Super maiden win

SUPER Brit Christian Iddon scorched to a maiden World Championship victory on the factory Aprilia 550 in the opening round of the FIM Supermoto World Championship (incorporating the UEM European Championships) staged at Castelletto di Branduzzo, Italy. A massive crowd of 8,000 spectators headed to the Motodromo to experience red hot racing on a red hot Sunday.
Iddon was hampered in the opening S2 race when hetangled with a rival at the start but came through to finish ninthbefore setting up his epic win.
In that opening S2 encounter, Davide Gozzini ledthe group into turn one, pulled away and won the heat. It was adifferent story for second place though, as Brit Matt Winstanleycrashed out and handed second to Max Verderosa. But the Italian brokehis clutch, and lost the second place to Gerald Delepine. The Belgianthen lost the front in the off-road section and crashed, then AttilioPignotti moved into second and kept it until the chequered flag.Delepine re-joined but it was too late and the Belgian rode to a safethird place as Iddon battled on for his ninth place points.
Iddon then made up for his first moto problems,and clinched his maiden heat win after an impressive race as once theBrit got the lead at lap four, he ran away to the chequered flag, asPignotti had to settle for second. The Italian earned the runner-upspot from Delepine. Winstanley stayed on this time to finish seventh.
Iddon's earlier ninth place finish proved useful as he holds a close third overall behind Pignotti.
Thierry Van Den Bosch heads the S1 class following a double victory.
The next round of the series will be the SupermotoGrand Prix of Torino and will be staged at night in the Oval Lingotto,on May 26.
